Our Story

Created by Top Chef Season 18 Contestant, Chef Nelson German of alaMar Kitchen & Bar, Sobre Mesa is an Afro-Latino Kitchen featuring lush surroundings, refined cocktails, seasonal cuisine, and up-tempo music. The libations and lively atmosphere take their inspiration from Nelson’s Dominican roots and African ancestry, with influences from Cuba, Puerto Rico and other Latin countries. The tapas menu, made using fresh local ingredients and flavors designed to pair perfectly with the cocktails, is a joyful expression of Nelson's culinary journey and heritage.

The name Sobre Mesa literally means “over the table.” It’s a reference to what you do after the meal, once the hunger has passed and real conversation can begin.

I hope Sobre Mesa will be Oakland’s premiere destination for not only great tapas and cocktails but great conversation and a sense of community.

Our Vision & Values

The name “Sobre Mesa” recalls the time spent gathering, chatting, and enjoying each other’s company while relaxing “over the table.”  It’s a reference to what you do after the meal, once the hunger has passed and meaningful conversation can begin.

Chef Nelson envisions Sobre Mesa to be Oakland’s premiere destination for not only amazing cocktails but great conversation and a sense of community.

We strive to create an inclusive space and bring people together from all walks of life to gather in a place reminiscent of being on vacation.  Explore the pleasure of the senses. The exotic colors of an opulent jungle, brings together a great balance between the energizing, fun vibes and relaxing, free-spirited lush atmosphere. The perfect mix of style, fun, authenticity, and of course, passion. A unique experience devoted to representing the wide diaspora of Afro-Latino culture reflected in the music, ambiance and food.

We are proud to support small and local businesses, from the purveyors we partner with to the minute details that makes up Sobre Mesa.  Our Art Gallery to the left as you enter, features works of local Afro Latino artists and you can support them by purchasing any of the pieces on display.  The massive lush mural was created by Local Edition Creative Artist David Cho. You may recognize the dining tables which were upcycled from our friends at Tamarindo as we breathe new life into them.  The beautiful tables in the Bottle Service Experience are crafted by a Latino woodmaker right here in the Bay Area and all plants were thoughtfully handpicked by Cassandra McCall of Gold and Rust Finds in Piedmont. We take pride in supporting the art community and making it possible for them to thrive.  So sit back and take in the beauty around you. Welcome to your new home.
